AEDP is an integrative and experiential therapy that is developing constantly. It has great richness and is particularly indicated and effective for attachment trauma, found in many clinical situations (see webinar on this topic). Its effectiveness may be one of the reasons AEDP is rapidly spreading in North and South America, Asia, and Europe.
About this training:
All human minds contain multitudes; in order words, multiplicity is a universal part of human consciousness. Running the gamut from normal role-based compartmentalization to severe psychic fragmentation resulting from trauma, we all have many parts of the self.
One can follow a traditional path of learning a complex experiential, transformational attachment therapy model like AEDP first and then applying it to a multi-dimensional system of internal parts, or, one can learn AEDP through the lens of parts work. That is the aim of this two-day workshop. Using intra-relational theory and interventions, which work within the frame of multiplicity of the self, we will cover AEDP basics of:
- Building secure attachment from the get-go through relational experiential interventions, between many different parts of the self
- Guiding patients to internalize new relational dynamics modeled off the AEDP therapeutic stance of affirmation, transformance detection, attunement, care and empathy.
- Emotional regulation and processing of dissociated emotion and trauma memories with multiple parts of the self.
- Implementing metaprocessing and State 3 & 4 work to promote organic integration of the internal system and consolidate healing.
(one or more small group experiential exercise/exploration will be offered
on some of these AEDP foundations)
We will apply these interventions (which will be shown in different videotaped psychotherapeutic sessions) to normal multiplicity as well as explore them in the context of complex trauma and dissociation. Complex attachment trauma can sever and inhibit the formation of deep and lasting bonds between self and other, self and self, self and emotion. The practice of AEDP, an empirically-supported treatment model, includes key elements to foster the healing of trauma, the integration of dissociated parts and the rekindling of deep, trusting relationships. Such trusting relationships can rekindle neuroplasticity to restructure insecure attachment patterns, promote safe emotional processing and transform trauma into flourishing. We will explore, in depth, elements such as the explicit use of relational interventions to build safety and containment, dyadic regulation of intense traumatic affects of fear, shame, and overwhelm, as well as reconnection to healing emotion via processing of core affect – all in the context of patients with complex trauma histories and dissociative symptoms. We will view these cases through the lens of intra-relational interventions, which place dual emphasis on internal attachment relationships formed through healing affective interchanges between distinct parts of the self, and on the intrinsic healing power of new emotional experiences. Parallel relational processes unfolding simultaneously within the external dyad (i.e. therapist/client) and internal dyads (i.e. client/dissociated ego-states) facilitate and accelerate the internalization of secure attachment dynamics. Strengthening these connections instills safety and containment which, in turn, segue ways into transformative affect work and deep processing of traumatic memories.
The trainer:
Kari Gleiser, PhD, is a senior faculty member of the AEDP Institute. In her private practice, she specializes in applying AEDP to the treatment of complex trauma and dissociation. For 14 years, Dr. Gleiser was the co-founder/co-director of the Center for Integrative Health in Hanover, NH, a trauma center dedicated to multi-modal healing of mind, body and spirit. Dr. Gleiser co-developed an “intra-relational” model of therapy that imports AEDP’s relational and experiential interventions to patients’ internal systems of dissociated self-states. Dr. Gleiser has written clinical papers and book chapters and presents internationally on complex trauma treatment. She also explores the intersection of psychotherapy and spirituality, as well as the emerging field of psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy. She lives in Tuscany, Italy, where she co-directs, The Island of Knowledge, a center for human flourishing.
